Did you ever read the book "Bluebeard" by Kurt Vonnegut? It's a fictional autobiography by a fictional character who was an abstract expressionist that hung with Pollock and crew back in the day and used paint that (unknowingly) disintegrated on the canvas after only a few years. Great stuff.
Funny you should mention that book. Get a cup of coffee and pull up a chair because this is a long tale.
About 16 years ago I bought Bluebeard at a used bookstore for a buck. Overall the condition of the book was excellent other than it had the worst musty smell ever. The smell was so awful that you couldn't read more than a page or two before the stench overpowered the reader.
After owning the book for about three years and not getting any farther than chapter 1, Bluebeard almost found it's way into the trash during a spring-cleaning. But I gave it one more shot to get rid of that odor. Well the perseverance paid off and I now own a first edition (and non-smelling) copy of Bluebeard!
Not being a Kurt Vonnegut aficionado I'm not sure if it's one of his best work. For me though it was a great read because of the subject matter and wanting to know what the main character had locked up in his barn.
Interestingly enough over the past year I've been thinking about how the main characters art disintegrates and how that concept relates to life. I’d go into more detail but I’m tired of typing.
So Dave… Have you read any other Vonnegut books and if so how do they compare to Bluebeard?
Let's see..I think I've read Cats Cradle, Slaughterhouse 5, Bluebeard, and Timequake. I really like them all. Slaughterhouse 5 is probably his most famous/highly regarded.
My paperback copies of Cats Cradle and Bluebeard also reek of must. I think I bought them a few years ago at that used book store on Euclid and E. 70th or thereabouts that was run by a guy who looked like Face from the A-Team.
Face from the A-Team, that's funny! :-) There's a good chance that Bluebeard was purchased at the same place where you got your paperbacks. It was either there or a little book store in Corning, NY.
Maybe Vonnegut wants his books to have the illusion that they've stood the test of time. So he has a special paper made that's embedded with a musty odor to give them the "air" of timelessness.
Dave - Did you ever see the movie Pollock? It's not bad. Ed Harris does a very good job at portraying Jackson. Also have you ever seen the whole original movie that the blog clip is cut from? Ever since high school I've wanted to see it but never have had the opportunity.
In the blog clip Jackson refers to himself as being 39 years old. The scary thought is I just turned 39 this past January. :-[ To steal a theme from Avenue Q, my purpose in life is still yet to be unfolded.
It’s true Dave, I’ve got a lot of blessings (great wife and family, brand new Zanconato cyclocross bike*, Rock Band skills that have been compared to that of Jimmy Page) that most everyone wants out of life. Though from a very early age I’ve always felt that there was a greater purpose for my life that went beyond the cool family, toys and skills … I’m going to stop writing now because this is starting to sound as if I’m taking a page out of the Simon Birch or Avenue Q scripts.
* Trust me … Part 2, 3, and 4 of the Zanconato bike build is coming soon.

Yea, I liked Ed Harris a lot in Pollock. I too have never seen the movie from which your YouTube clip was taken.
As for your "purpose," you've got a wonderful family, a beautiful cross bike, and mad Rock Band skills. What else do you want from life??
